Few weapons in anime have carved their name into legend like theΒ Enma Sword. In the world of One Piece, where power is often defined by brute strength, haki, and devil fruits, the Enma Sword stands out as a weapon of overwhelming potential β one that doesnβt just rely on its userβs strength but actively pushes them beyond their limits. From its historical roots in Wano to its epic clashes with the likes of Kaido, Enmaβs legacy is permanently engraved into the narrative of the series.
In this blog, we explore everything there is to know about the Enma Sword: its origins, powers, wielders, and how it helped Zoro scar one of the Four Emperors. Whether youβre a casual fan or a seasoned theorist, this deep dive into the Enma Sword will uncover why itβs one of the most iconic weapons in anime history.
The Enma Sword was forged in the Land of Wano by one of the greatest swordsmiths in the One Piece world β Shimotsuki Kozaburo. This legendary blacksmith was also the creator of another powerful blade: the Wado Ichimonji. Kozaburo fled Wano decades ago and established a village in the East Blue, which later became Zoroβs homeland.
Enma is one of the 21 O Wazamono-grade swords β a classification reserved for some of the most elite swords in existence. What makes it even more unique is its direct connection to the Kozuki family. It was passed down to Kozuki Oden, a samurai of unparalleled strength who once wielded both Enma and Ame no Habakiri. These twin swords were used to scar Kaido, one of the most powerful beings in the One Piece world.
The name βEnmaβ comes from King Enma (or Yama), the Japanese ruler of the underworld. This name is fitting, as the Enma Sword behaves like a spirit-hungry demon, constantly drawing out its wielderβs Haki. It doesnβt wait for permission β it demands energy, making it a double-edged weapon in every sense.
This trait reflects its mythological namesake, a figure who judges souls and punishes them based on their sins. In Zoroβs hands, the Enma Sword becomes both a tool of judgment and a test of his ability to control overwhelming power.
After Odenβs death, the Enma Sword was kept by his daughter, Hiyori. When Zoro arrives in Wano during the events of the Wano Country Arc, Hiyori decides to entrust Enma to him, offering it as a replacement for Shusui β another powerful sword that had been returned to Ryumaβs grave.
This decision wasnβt made lightly. Hiyori believed that Zoro, a swordsman of remarkable will and discipline, was the only person worthy of inheriting her fatherβs blade. With his newfound allyship to the Kozuki family and deepening resolve to defeat Kaido, Zoro accepted the Enma Sword, setting the stage for one of the most iconic moments in One Piece history.
What sets the Enma Sword apart is its ability to draw out its wielder's Armament Haki without restraint. Unlike most swords that passively channel a swordsman's Haki, Enma actively pulls it out. This makes it both incredibly dangerous and incredibly powerful.
Zoro initially struggles with the Enma Sword. Upon first using it, his Haki is drained so rapidly that his arm nearly withers. However, this is not a flaw in the sword β it's a reflection of its sheer might. Once mastered, Enma enables Zoro to channel far more Haki than he could previously control, enhancing both his offense and his growth as a swordsman.
Perhaps the most legendary moment involving the Enma Sword is Zoroβs clash against Kaido atop Onigashima. In this battle, Zoro channels an immense amount of Conquerorβs Haki through Enma β something previously believed to be only accessible to the strongest warriors in the world.
In a stunning moment, Zoro uses a technique known as Asura: Blades Drawn, Dead Manβs Game, and manages to scar Kaido β a feat only Oden had accomplished before. This instantly elevated Zoroβs status and confirmed Enma as one of the few weapons capable of injuring a Yonko.
While Zoro does not defeat Kaido, his contribution to the battle plays a crucial role in the overall war and paves the way for Luffyβs eventual victory. More importantly, it proves that Zoro is not just the Pirate Kingβs right hand β he is a monster in his own right.
The Enma Sword is often compared to other legendary blades in the One Piece universe, including:
Though each of these swords is powerful in its own right, Enma Sword powers give it a distinct identity β one that challenges and evolves its user constantly.
This is one of the most exciting fan theories currently circulating in the One Piece community. When a sword becomes a βBlack Bladeβ (Kokuto), its power permanently increases, and it becomes an even more significant relic in the world. Weβve only seen this with swords like Yoru, wielded by Dracule Mihawk, and Shusui, previously held by Ryuma.
During his time with the Enma Sword, Zoro appears to be turning it into a black blade. This would signify that he has not only mastered it but has permanently upgraded one of the worldβs most dangerous weapons. If this transformation is confirmed, it would make Enma one of the most powerful swords in all of One Piece β potentially even rivaling Mihawkβs Yoru.
Itβs impossible to separate Zoroβs growth from his bond with the Enma Sword. What started as a blade too powerful for him to wield has become a defining part of his arsenal. More importantly, it has become a symbol of his progression toward becoming the worldβs greatest swordsman.
Through the Enma Sword, Zoro learned control, resilience, and mastery over his own Haki. It has pushed him to the brink and beyond, reinforcing the idea that in One Piece, swords are not just weapons β they are characters, teachers, and legacies.
As of now, it seems likely that Zoro will continue to wield the Enma Sword well into the final arcs of One Piece. Its connection to Wano, its untapped potential, and its synergy with Zoroβs Haki make it a blade that feels earned, not gifted.
Should he succeed in turning it into a black blade, the Enma Sword will not just be the blade that scarred a Yonko β it will be the blade that helped Zoro carve his name into legend.
