Jujutsu Kaisen is a series filled with powerful cursed techniques, devastating domain expansions, and legendary battles between sorcerers and cursed spirits. However, even in a world where supernatural abilities reign supreme, some weapons stand out as game-changers. One such weapon is the Split Soul Katana, wielded by the infamous assassin Toji Fushiguro.
This katana is unique among cursed tools because it doesnβt just slice through flesh and boneβit directly targets the soul, bypassing all conventional defenses. This makes it one of the few weapons in the series capable of striking down even the most powerful sorcerers, including the seemingly invincible Satoru Gojo.
But how exactly did the Split Soul Katana come close to ending the life of the strongest sorcerer in the world? Letβs break it down.
Unlike traditional cursed tools, which rely on cursed energy to amplify their cutting power, the Split Soul Katana has a unique property: it bypasses all physical and metaphysical defenses by cutting directly at the soul.
This ability is what makes the weapon so terrifying. Normally, when a sorcerer is attacked, their cursed energy automatically reinforces their body, reducing damage and preventing fatal wounds. However, the Split Soul Katana completely ignores this defense because it doesnβt just cut the bodyβit severs the soul itself.
Only sorcerers who possess the rare ability to see the souls of inorganic objects can unlock the katanaβs full potential. Toji Fushiguro, despite being completely void of cursed energy, wielded it with unmatched precision and skill, making it a lethal instrument in his hands.
Toji Fushiguro is one of the most fearsome non-sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen. Born into the Zenin Clan, he was abandoned due to his Heavenly Restriction, a rare condition that stripped him of all cursed energy. However, in exchange, he gained inhuman levels of physical strength, reflexes, and speed, far surpassing those of even the most talented sorcerers.
With no cursed energy to detect, Toji could move undetected even against those with the Six Eyes, making him an unparalleled assassin. This, combined with his mastery over specialized cursed tools, made him an unstoppable force.
Though Tojiβs primary weapon against Satoru Gojo was the Inverted Spear of Heaven, which nullifies cursed techniques, the Split Soul Katana was another weapon in his deadly arsenal. It was not used against Gojo directly, but it played a key role in his other battles, demonstrating its terrifying potential.
One of the most notable moments showcasing the katanaβs power was when Toji effortlessly sliced through Suguru Getoβs Rainbow Dragon, an ability that was considered one of Getoβs strongest Shikigami summons. Since cursed spirits are composed of cursed energy, this meant the katanaβs effect was strong enough to bypass all cursed defenses.
Had Toji chosen to wield the Split Soul Katana against Gojo, itβs possible he could have landed a fatal blow, as it was one of the only weapons capable of cutting through Gojoβs Limitless technique without the need for cursed energy nullification.
Satoru Gojo is considered the strongest sorcerer in history due to his Limitless technique, which allows him to create an invisible barrier of infinite space around his body, making him nearly untouchable. He also possesses the Six Eyes, which give him unparalleled perception and allow him to process information at an inhuman level.
However, despite his god-like abilities, Gojo is not invincible. There are only a handful of ways to defeat him:
Since the katana directly targets the soul, it wouldnβt matter how strong Gojoβs Limitless barrier was. If Toji had landed a strike, it could have completely bypassed his defenses and cut through him like any ordinary person.
Despite its power, Toji ultimately chose the Inverted Spear of Heaven over the Split Soul Katana in his battle against Gojo. There are a few key reasons for this decision:
That being said, had Toji chosen to wield the Split Soul Katana, the battle might have played out very differently.
Even after Tojiβs death, the legacy of the Split Soul Katana continued. A replica of the weapon was later wielded by Maki Zenin, another sorcerer who had undergone a transformation similar to Toji. After the events of the Zenin Clan Massacre, where Maki gained Toji-like physical abilities, she used the katana to wipe out nearly the entire Zenin Clan single-handedly.
Makiβs use of the Split Soul Katana cemented its reputation as one of the deadliest weapons in Jujutsu Kaisen. With Maki now carrying on Tojiβs legacy, itβs possible that we may see the katana play a larger role in the series moving forward.
The answer is yesβif Toji had landed a clean hit, the Split Soul Katana could have bypassed Gojoβs defenses and delivered a fatal wound. However, due to the nature of their battle and Tojiβs strategy, he chose the Inverted Spear of Heaven instead.
Even though it wasnβt used against Gojo, the Split Soul Katana remains one of the most terrifying weapons in Jujutsu Kaisen. It represents the idea that raw skill and precision can rival even the strongest supernatural abilities. And with Maki now wielding its replica, the legacy of this weapon is far from over.
Whether or not we will see this katana cut through another powerful sorcerer remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: in the right hands, it is a weapon capable of killing even the strongest sorcerer alive.
