Today we’ll be diving deep into the lore of Zabuza Momochi Sword Kubikiri.
Appearance
The Kubikiribōchō translates to Decapitating Carving Knife literally. Known as the Seversword in Naruto’s world, this mystical blade is actually the possession of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. Like other weapons wielded by the group, the Kubikiri has been passed down from one generation to another since the First Mizukage's era.
Appearance-wise, the Kubikiribōchō strikes fear into the hearts of its enemies. The large broadsword measures 250 centimeters in length with a weight of 30 kilograms, making it impossible for it to be wielded by everyone. What’s impressive though is that despite its size, the transport is easy to transport since the handle is detachable. More importantly, the strap attached to the weapon makes it easy to maneuver for the wielder.
Background
Most viewers may not be aware but the sword was originally wielded by Jūzō Biwa while he was
one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. In his hands, the sword sealed the fate of many poor souls. In the series, Juzo ended up betraying the Kirigakure and joined hands with Akatsuki with the Kubikiri in his hands. However, after he was killed in battle along with Yagura Karatachi, the village took over the mighty sword.
Mangetsu Hozuki also has his name on the short list of people who wielded the sword but most folks tend to associate the Kubikiri with Zabuza Momochi for good reason. He was able to turn the tide of many battles thanks to his trusty weapon right up until his death. His relationship with his sword is deeply intertwined with his identity. The Kubikiri Bōchō is not just a weapon; it represents Zabuza's past, his struggles, and his desire for power and recognition.
From the moment the ninja got his hands on the blade, he struck down many foes to restore it to its original condition. Fortunately, he managed to do just that when he struck a blow to Kakashi Hatake who had already been rendered helpless by Haku.
However, Zabuza didn’t get to wield the original blade for long as he found himself overpowered by Kakashi. Surprisingly, Kakashi was able to wield the blade skillfully. In fact, by channeling lightning-natured chakra through the blade, he was able to level up the sword’s damage power.
After the war, the sword was eventually returned to Kirigakure. If you’ve watched the series, you’ll know that it was a rebel group by the name of the New Seven Ninja Swordsmen who made it their mission to steal the seven blades. Their purpose? To start a revolution against Kirigakure, hoping to return the village to its glory days of the "Bloody Mist". Hassaku Onomichi took up Kubikiribōchō. However, he was soon defeated and the sword was returned to the village.
Usage
As far as the abilities are concerned, the Kubikiri doesn’t disappoint. In fact, it measures up to the expectations thanks to its unique ability. Like other weapons wielded by the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, the sword is able to repair itself using the iron of the blood of those who are unfortunate enough to be slain by it. And that’s saying something since no one is safe from the Kubikiri. The sword is able to deal out heavy damage and slice through almost anything.
What’s even better is that the regenerative process is not time-consuming and restores the sword to its original condition regardless of the severity of the damage in the nick of a second. The only drawback is the sword’s size. Considering its enormous dimensions, the Kubikiri is not a weapon to be wielded by the weak and feeble. Instead, it’s reserved for those with incredible strength. Anyone else wielding the sword will find himself physically tired after a few swings.
More importantly, ninjas are able to use their chakra to enhance the sword’s abilities. Throughout the series, Zabuza exploited this ability many times as he turned the sword from merely a weapon to an extension of himself. This unbreakable connection allowed him to pull off flashy moves, turning the odds in his favor. Apart from that, Zabuza was also able to summon mist and bind his enemies thanks to his trusted weapon.
Where is the Kubikiri Now?
In the manga, the sword falls into Suigetsu’s hands. However, the anime deviates from the source material. Instead of Suigetsu, the mighty sword falls into the hands of a crime boss who has a personal score to settle with the blade since it had brought about the death of many of his men, Tenzen Daikoku.
Tenzen kept it around as a trophy and at one point, it was wielded by one of his bodyguards. However, in the end, Suigetsu manages to get his hands on it like in the manga after stealing it from the crime boss.
In the end, Kubikiribōchō's legacy is a testament to its formidable power and the skill of those who have wielded it.
