Appearance

Nanami always fights with a blunt cleaver that is wrapped in a cloth with a splotchy black dot design similar to his tie. The cleaver has a short wooden handle and geometrically has the same shape as a normal cleaver that is used to cut meat.

Nanami uses the cleaver in sync with his innate technique: Tokaku Juho.

Background

Unfortunately, not much is known about where Nanami came to find the Cleaver. However, we do know that it was unlike the other cursed tools and was merely a cleaver before it came into Nanami’s hands. Over time with the constant flow of Nanami’s cursed energy through it, the weapon slowly transformed into a cursed tool.

Usage

Interestingly, Nanami’s cleaver doesn’t have a cursed technique of its own but serves as a channel through which Nanami harnesses his innate 7:3 technique. The Ration technique or Tokaku Johu in Japanese; divides the target’s body within ten lines and forcibly creates a weak spot with a ratio of 7 to 3. But the cool thing about Nanami’s ability is that it isn’t limited by the target’s height or wingspan. Nanami has the choice to divide whatever body part he wants, even the torso, head, arms, and legs. Plus, this technique can also be used on inanimate objects making it more versatile and useful.

How Nanami’s technique works with the Cleaver

But if Nanami is perfectly capable of using his technique without the cleaver then why does he use it? By all regards, it wouldn’t make sense as the Cleaver’s blunt edge isn’t sharp enough to slice through powerful opponents. Nor does the Cleaver have any cursed technique of its own.

To put it simply, Nanami uses all the negatives of the Cleaver to take advantage of a binding vow that increases its effectiveness.

Another binding vow that Nanami uses to amplify the Cleaver’s already amped-up attack power is ‘revealing one’s hand’. The binding vow increases the power of the user’s next attack after he reveals how his technique works. It is one of the most commonly used binding vows in the entire series.

What is a binding vow?

Binding vows are one of the tenets of Jujutsu sorcery and are essentially used by every sorcerer. These vows are simply contracts that a person makes either with himself or someone else. By abiding by the rules and restrictions set in these contracts, a person can harness greater power or achieve a goal by working with someone else.

And if someone were to break the binding vow then there are extreme repercussions that all sorcerers avoid.

What grade cursed tool is the Cleaver?

It is still unclear of what grade Nanami’s Cleaver stands on as a cursed tool. However, we can be sure of the fact that it’s insanely powerful and maybe even a special grade. This hypothesis can be backed up by the claim that Nanami has insane amounts of cursed energy even sending a special-grade curse like Mahito in awe.

After the constant flow of Nanami’s immense cursed energy, the cleaver has likely climbed the ranks of the cursed tool and become a special grade.
