Toji Fushiguro's special grade cursed tool is easily one of the most powerful weapons in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. It is nearly impossible for an opponent to beat the enigmatic sorcerer killer, Toji Fushiguro. One hit from his dreaded Inverted Spear of Heaven and it’s game over. But, what exactly is this weapon of death?
Today we’ll be diving deep into the lore of Toji Fushiguro's Inverted Spear of Heaven. Discuss all that is to know about this cursed blade of death!
Appearance
At first glance, the Inverted Spear of Heaven might seem like any other cursed tool. Appearance wise it looks like a short dagger with an unusually shaped blade, divided into two segments that resemble a jitte, with a q shaped hand guard on the side of the longer blade. The black handle of the spear features a circular link.
Thanks to this unique design, the dagger can be easily fitted with metal chains, transforming it into a longer-range melee weapon. A broken edge on the top of the spear shows the blade was actually composed of three branches, styled like a trident.
What makes the inverted spear of heaven deadly is the cursed technique that enables Toji Fushiguro to stop the technique of any other opponent as soon as the spear comes in contact with it.
Because of this, it instantly disables both the target and the jujutsu technique when it is performed against them, making them vulnerable to physical attacks and unable to defend themselves against the spear.
Background
The origins of this cursed weapon are shrouded in mystery, making it all the more mysterious and terrifying within the "Jujutsu Kaisen" universe. However, according to some hints, Ame no Sakahoko spear from Japanese mythology is the inspiration behind the design and the name of the spear. This mythical weapon is related to the twin gods Izanami and Izanagi, as well as Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu.
Legend has it that Ninigi-no-Mikoto struck the spear into the summit of Mount Takachiho in Japan. The original blade was partially destroyed in a volcanic eruption in 1913, and a replica was later installed in its place.
Usage
Toji Fushiguro initially kept this formidable weapon concealed within his inventory curse, along with other cursed tools. This was possible as the weapon could simply be swallowed and concealed by the another of Toji’s curses. This means Toji had access to the spear of Heaven at all times but waited for the right moment and a powerful opponent to finally use it.
We first got to see this weapon in Season 2 when Toji Fushiguro fought against Satoru Gojo during the Star Plasma Vessel Escort Mission, when Satoru and Suguru Geto were escorting Riko Amanai to fuse with Tengen. This battle was a fantastic display of the power of the Inverted Spear of Heaven and its extraordinary ability to nullify any other technique, even powerful ones like the Limitless that could easily have destroyed a weaker cursed weapon.
The inverted Spear of Heaven operates like a typical spear, except it is powered by a special type of cursed energy. It is quite versatile in its applications and can be used in a variety of ways to bypass powerful cursed techniques at the level of the Limitless.
In the very first fight in which Toji used the spear, the unique abilities of the weapon became very clear. Despite Satoru's Infinity ability provided by the Limitless, Toji manages to close the distance and stab Satoru through the throat with the Inverted Spear of Heaven. Toji outsmarted Gojo by using the Fly Heads to hide his cursed energy, sneaking in close without being detected.
His flawless strategies and mastery of the weapon is clear by how he combines the spear to other powerful weapons. In another fight, Toji finished off Suguru Geto's Kuchisake-Onna with a blunt strike from the Inverted Spear of Heaven, deliberately knocking Geto unconscious rather than killing him.
In his last and final battle against Gojo, Toji Fushiguro attached the Inverted Spear of Heaven to the Chain of a Thousand Miles, a Special Grade Cursed Tool that can extend endlessly as long as one end is hidden. He did this by placing one end of the chain inside his Inventory Curse. This setup made the weapon look like a kusarigama, allowing him to try and nullify Gojo's Limitless Red and Blue techniques from a distance.
Where Is The Spear Now?
The Inverted Spear of Heaven's unique capabilities have made it an iconic element of Toji's combat arsenal and made him into a feared competitor. Its ability to disrupt the flow of cursed energy and render powerful techniques ineffective gives Toji a significant edge over even the most formidable opponents.
